Washington D.C. (May 30, 2023) — On May 30, Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-12) released a joint-statement after co-leading the introduction of an amendment to the latest debt limit agreement to remove the expanded GOP work requirements on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

“Republicans’ insistence that the federal government rip food from vulnerable people’s mouths in order to solve their manufactured crisis is despicable and frankly outrageous. Congresswoman Barbara Lee and I are joining forces to include an amendment that would strike the GOP’s extended work requirements for people who rely on SNAP benefits. As people who have relied on food assistance programs, we refuse to allow Republicans to mischaracterize and malign those who need our help the most. Work requirements are ineffective at best, and deadly at worst. Allowing people to starve and children to go hungry is not a solution to any problem — it's racist, classist, and inhumane.”

The amendment is co-sponsored by Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04), and Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12).
