The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Apr. 17 that they will host the Cardinals Care annual 5K run and walk this Saturday, with proceeds supporting local youth sports and national efforts against domestic violence.
The event aims to raise funds for the Redbird Rookies Program, which provides baseball and softball opportunities for area children, as well as Joe Torre’s Safe at Home Foundation, a nonprofit focused on addressing domestic violence and abuse.
Participants in the family-friendly race will follow a course through downtown St. Louis, finishing on Clark Street before taking a lap around Busch Stadium’s warning track. The event coincides with the Cardinals’ major league team playing away in Houston.
Former National League Most Valuable Player, Cardinals player, and Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre is scheduled to attend alongside Jackie Joyner-Kersee to cheer runners at the start and finish line. Torre has spoken publicly about his experiences with domestic violence growing up and his commitment to helping others facing similar challenges.
“We’re thrilled to invite fans downtown for a family-friendly event to help raise funds for two worthy causes,” said Marybeth Johnson, manager of communications and charity events for Cardinals Care.
For those unable to attend in person or wishing to participate virtually, there is an online option that includes discounts at the team store and Cardinals Nation Restaurant through June. Registration for virtual participants runs until May 30; registration for in-person runners is open until race day morning. Top male and female finishers will have an opportunity to throw out an honorary pitch at a future game, while top three finishers by age group receive tickets to a 2026 game. “So there are prizes involved,” Johnson said.
