The St. Louis Cardinals have started the season with a 10-8 record, according to an April 16 report, and their defensive performance is standing out as a key factor. The team has focused on rebuilding this year, but its defense has emerged as one of the best in baseball.
Strong defensive play is giving the Cardinals an edge as they look to remain competitive throughout the season. While many teams prioritize offense, St. Louis appears to be relying on solid fielding and run prevention to stay in games.
Through the first 18 games, the Cardinals lead Major League Baseball with 10 Outs Above Average (OAA) and eight runs prevented. This continues a trend from last season when they finished tied for first in OAA at 36. Despite losing standout defenders like Nolan Arenado, Brendan Donovan, and Willson Contreras during the offseason, new players have stepped up defensively.
Rookie JJ Wetherholt has transitioned to second base full-time this year and currently leads all players in OAA with five. His highlight-reel plays have drawn attention early in his career. Alongside him is Gold Glove shortstop Masyn Winn, who ranks sixth in baseball for OAA after finishing tied for third last year.
Nolan Gorman has also contributed at third base with two OAA so far this season while filling Arenado’s former role. The Cardinals’ pitching staff relies heavily on ground-ball outs—their groundball rate is tied for third-highest in baseball at 47.6 percent—making strong defense even more important.
In addition to impressive play from their infielders, outfielders like Victor Scott II and Jordan Walker are preventing runs with their range and arm strength. Left field could improve further if Nathan Church overcomes some early mistakes. Behind the plate, Pedro Pages aims to regain his form from last year while working alongside Iván Herrera.
Looking ahead, while St. Louis develops pitchers known for generating strikeouts who are not yet major league ready, maintaining elite defense will be crucial for maximizing results from their current roster.
