Des Peres Department of Public Safety – We Would Like to Introduce the Newest Officer to Our Department, K-9 Obe

We would like to introduce the newest officer to our department, K-9 Obe, pictured below with our officer/handler PSO Brandon Elzinga.  Obe specializes in firearms detection, person tracking, and article search and will be primarily assigned to support West County Center along with visiting our schools and attending city/community events.  While the State of Missouri is an open carry state in relation to firearms, firearms are not permitted on private property such as West County Center when it is not allowed by the property owner with the proper signage.

You may ask, why the name Obe?  The name Obe is to honor our fallen officer, PO John Oberkramer, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on December 24, 1978.  Obe is the family nickname and it was important to the department, and family, that officer Oberkamer’s legacy will never be forgotten.

Obe and PSO Elzinga will attend intensive training together at FM K-9 in Michigan starting on July 25 with a tentative return to the department on September 5.  We look forward to introducing Obe at a future City of Des Peres Board of Alderman meeting and meet and greet event at West County Center.

We would like to thank the overwhelming support from the community on our K-9 project.  The department has seen overwhelming support for this project in the form of donations and appreciation for our proactive program to support and serve the community.  If you are interested in supporting the program or have questions about Obe and our program please contact either Chief Hall, Captain Severs, or PSO Elzinga at 314-835-6235.

The department would also like to thank Mayor Becker, the Board of Alderman, Public Safety Commission, City Administrator, and Assistant City Administrator for their support of our vision of the K-9 program.
