St. Louis CITY SC has announced the buyout of defender Joakim Nilsson’s guaranteed contract, effective for the 2025 season. With this move, Nilsson will no longer be part of the club’s Senior Roster, and his salary will not count against the team’s salary budget for 2025.

“Joakim has been a true professional throughout his time in St. Louis,” said Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. “Unfortunately, injuries prevented him from contributing as much as he and the club would have liked. We thank him for his commitment both on and off the field and wish him and his family all the best moving forward.”

Nilsson joined St. Louis CITY SC before its first Major League Soccer season and made 32 appearances in regular season matches.

The club’s decision to exercise a contract buyout aligns with MLS rules that allow teams to remove a player’s guaranteed salary from their budget under certain conditions. More details about these regulations can be found on the official MLS website.
