Sonny Gray delivered a strong performance for the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, holding the San Francisco Giants hitless through 5 1/3 innings at Busch Stadium. This outing helped the Cardinals secure a 4-3 win and break Gray’s two-game losing streak, which had included losses to the Pirates and Athletics.

The Cardinals’ offense took advantage in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four walks and two singles. The victory marked their fourth win in five games. With this result, and following a loss by the Mets (76-67), St. Louis (72-72) moved to within 4 1/2 games of the final National League Wild Card spot.

The Giants (72-71), who lost close games to the Cardinals on both Saturday night and Sunday, remain four games behind the Mets in the Wild Card race. Both teams will meet again for three more games in San Francisco from September 22 to 24.
