The Arizona Fall League is set to begin its new season on Monday, with Scottsdale facing Peoria at 6:30 p.m. local time. The league serves as a showcase for some of baseball’s top prospects and also provides an opportunity for lesser-known players to make an impression.
Among the under-the-radar prospects highlighted this year are players who have dealt with injuries or limited playing time during the regular season, giving them a chance to stand out in the fall. Last year’s AFL Triple Crown winner and MVP Josue Briceño was cited as an example of a player who used the league to boost his profile after returning from injury.
Each Major League Baseball organization has sent at least one such prospect not currently ranked in their farm system’s Top 30. For the St. Louis Cardinals, outfielder Travis Honeyman is among those hoping to improve his standing. A former Boston College standout and third-round pick in 2023, Honeyman has struggled with shoulder issues that required surgery last year and has yet to advance beyond High-A ball. He posted a .322 slugging percentage in 53 games at that level this season but remains an above-average runner. The Fall League offers him a chance to demonstrate improved power and rebuild his prospect stock.
Other organizations are represented by players with varied backgrounds, including recent draft picks, international signings, and even those who transitioned from independent leagues or other positions on the field. Some are recovering from injuries or surgeries—such as Tommy John procedures—while others are looking to capitalize on unique skills like knuckleball pitching or speed on the bases.
The Arizona Fall League will run for six weeks, providing these prospects with valuable exposure against strong competition as they aim to advance within their respective organizations.
