During his introduction as the new president of baseball operations for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chaim Bloom discussed his vision for the team's future, emphasizing a focus on long-term goals and strategic decision-making. Despite speculation about a potential rebuild, Bloom avoided using that term when describing the club's direction for 2026.

“A lot of people will call it a lot of different things, and that’s OK with me,” Bloom said regarding whether the team is entering a rebuilding phase. “It’s really just about staying focused on the goal and trying to make move after move that pushes us toward it.”

Bloom inherits a roster featuring established players such as Brendan Donovan, Iván Herrera, Willson Contreras, Masyn Winn, Alec Burleson, Matthew Liberatore, Michael McGreevy, JoJo Romero, Riley O’Brien, Kyle Leahy and Matt Svanson. However, he acknowledged that additions are needed to remain competitive in the National League.

One significant question facing the team is whether third baseman Nolan Arenado will return next season. Last year saw trade discussions involving Arenado fall through due to his no-trade clause. This offseason may see renewed efforts to find a trade partner willing to take on part of Arenado’s $42 million contract. The club has indicated they will not waive him but are open to his return if a suitable deal cannot be reached.

Arenado commented on his future with the team: “I don’t know what is going to happen, but I do believe that change is coming -- as it should.”

The Cardinals are also evaluating their patience with young players Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker. Bloom noted both have shown promise but need more consistency. Gorman could become the starting third baseman if Arenado departs. For Walker, concerns remain about his approach at the plate and willingness to adapt.

Addressing pitching needs is another priority for Bloom this offseason. The organization hopes to retain Sonny Gray after he led the team to a strong record in games he started during 2025. Other rotation options include Liberatore—who finished last season well—and McGreevy and Leahy who both made positive impressions.

Prospect JJ Wetherholt’s role is another point of discussion for 2026. Although he did not debut late last season despite being ranked highly by MLB Pipeline, Wetherholt is expected by many within the organization to compete for an Opening Day spot at second base and possibly lead off in the batting order.

The Cardinals’ financial situation may impact offseason decisions as revenues declined following changes in television rights deals and lower attendance during 2025.
