The Cardinals achieved their largest comeback win of the season on Saturday against the Guardians, turning a five-run deficit into a 9-6 victory at Progressive Field. This marked their 21st come-from-behind win of the year, tying them for sixth most in Major League Baseball.
Victor Scott II played a pivotal role with a two-run double in the sixth inning. "Going all the way back to the first day, that practice [in Spring Training], we talked about being relentless, and I feel like it’s showing up throughout this year," Scott stated.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol praised his team's resilience. "Man, they’ve done this all year, and it feels like we’re never out of a game," he said.
The Cardinals' fifth consecutive road win secured their first series victory in Cleveland since 2015. They are now within striking distance in both the National League Central race and Wild Card standings.
Brendan Donovan, Masyn Winn, and Alec Burleson contributed key hits during the rally. Marmol considered pinch-hitting for Scott against lefty Tim Herrin but decided to stick with him due to pre-game adjustments made with hitting coach Brant Brown. Scott's performance paid off as he tied the game at six.
Several milestones were reached during the game: Matt Svanson earned his first win, Phil Maton recorded his 500th career strikeout, Willson Contreras notched his 900th hit, and Ryan Helsley achieved his 100th save.
Reflecting on the team’s approach, Masyn Winn emphasized their focus on consistent hitting rather than home runs. "Stringing together all those hits is huge for us. We feel like we’re never out of a game," he said.
