CITY2 reached the semifinals after a 3-0 victory over Ventura County FC last Sunday. The scoring began early with an own goal by a Ventura County defender in the third minute. Brendan McSorley added two goals in the 81st and 87th minutes, achieving his first professional playoff brace and helping secure the win for CITY2.
McSorley has now contributed to six goals—four goals and two assists—across four career MLS NEXT Pro playoff matches. Christian Olivares recorded his first playoff clean sheet, while Tyson Pearce and Emil Jääskeläinen registered their first assists of the postseason.
During the regular season, St Louis and Minnesota played three times. Their first meeting was on May 15 in Minnesota, where Mykhi Joyner scored twice and Miguel Perez netted the game winner for CITY2. In July at Energizer Park, CITY2 won 4-0 with goals from McSorley, Perez, Cam Cilley, and Caden Glover. The teams last met in September at Energizer Park, ending in a 1-1 draw before CITY2 won the penalty shootout 3-2. Sunday's game marks the first playoff encounter between the two clubs.
Minnesota United FC 2 advanced to the semifinals after defeating Real Monarchs 2-1 on the road last Sunday. In their final ten regular season matches, MNUFC2 lost twice, to Real Monarchs and North Texas SC.
