ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals are navigating a pivotal stretch as they approach the trade deadline, with Oliver Marmol's leadership being a focal point of discussion. Marmol has been balancing development and winning, keeping the team in playoff contention 96 games into the season.

Despite initial predictions of a challenging year, Marmol, along with pitching coach Dusty Blake, new hitting coach Brant Brown, and coaching newcomer Jon Jay, have managed to exceed expectations. They have provided opportunities for players like Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman while maintaining high standards.

Marmol emphasized the importance of developing while winning: “I find, when you can [develop and win] together, that’s high-level development,” he said.

The Cardinals aim to push for the playoffs while remaining flexible. They have defied expectations by playing resilient baseball despite challenges such as injuries and pitching struggles. If they fall out of contention, the focus will shift to accelerating development plans for prospects like Michael McGreevy and JJ Wetherholt.

As the trade deadline approaches, departing president of baseball operations John Mozeliak indicated that decisions on buying or selling will depend on standings in late July. Relievers Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton, and Steven Matz could be traded due to expiring contracts.

Nolan Arenado remains a key player but has faced injuries recently. His future with the team is uncertain as he desires to play for a championship contender before retirement.

Prospect JJ Wetherholt is one to watch after being promoted to Triple-A Memphis. His performance could lead to a late-season promotion similar to Masyn Winn in 2023.
