Ryan Helsley, Pitcher | St. Louis Cardinals
Walking through the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse, Ryan Helsley reflects on his long tenure with the team. At 31 years old and in his 11th year with the organization, Helsley is facing uncertainty as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches.
"It's crazy to think of myself as a vet and being one of the old guys in here," said Helsley. "But it's also pretty cool."
Helsley achieved his 100th MLB career save on June 28 in Cleveland but acknowledges that closers often don't have secure roles on rebuilding teams. He understands he might be traded before July 31, a prospect that weighs heavily on him.
"The Cardinals are all he knows" in professional baseball, and he can't imagine wearing another jersey. If possible, he'd prefer to sign a contract extension to remain in St. Louis, where his family has settled.
"I would entertain [an extension offer], for sure," Helsley stated. "This is my 11th year here... I believe in the clubhouse and the young talent we have."
Despite not matching his dominant performance from 2024 due to early-season toe trouble affecting his mechanics, Helsley's current stats remain strong: a 3-1 record with a 3.27 ERA and saves in 19 of 24 opportunities.
Teams like the Phillies, Dodgers, Yankees, and Tigers may find Helsley's skills appealing given their bullpen struggles this season.
While acknowledging trade rumors and potential contracts like those signed by Josh Hader and Edwin Díaz, Helsley remains focused on performing well for the Cardinals.
"It's tough... but I've loved being a Cardinal," said Helsley. "It's been an honor to wear the birds on the bat."
