St Louis CITY2 will play Sporting Kansas City II on Sunday, August 24 at 6:00 p.m. CT at Energizer Park. The match is available for streaming on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.
CITY2 recently secured the first playoff spot in MLS NEXT Pro this season after a 3-1 win over North Texas SC last Saturday. Mykhi Joyner, Brendan McSorley, and Matteo Kidd scored in that match, giving CITY2 their fifteenth victory of the year. This result also set a new record for the longest unbeaten streak in MLS NEXT Pro history with 13 consecutive matches without defeat. The previous record was held by Colorado Rapids 2 with a 12-match unbeaten run in 2023.
Joyner's goal against North Texas SC marked his fourteenth of the season, putting him one goal behind the league leader in goals scored. McSorley now has eight goals and six assists this season, contributing to a total of fourteen goals. Kidd scored his sixth goal late in stoppage time during the same match. Emil Jääskeläinen provided his seventh assist of the season and is currently tied for third place in assists across MLS NEXT Pro.
Five CITY2 players have each scored six or more goals this season: Mykhi Joyner, Brendan McSorley, Emil Jääskeläinen, Miguel Perez, and Matteo Kidd.
Sporting Kansas City II has faced difficulties throughout their campaign with a record of two wins, fifteen losses, and four draws for a total of eleven points. On August 12, SKC II announced that head coach Istvan Urbanyi had left the club and named assistant coach Ike Opara as interim head coach. Both victories for Kansas City came away from home—against LAFC 2 on July 27 (3-1) and Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on July 31 (3-2).
