St. Louis CITY SC falls to Vancouver Whitecaps after late penalty

St. Louis CITY SC lost 3-2 to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night at BC Place. Eduard Löwen opened the scoring for St. Louis in the 14th minute with a header from a cross by Conrad Wallem. Vancouver tied the match just before halftime when Brian White converted a penalty kick.

In the second half, João Klauss put St. Louis ahead again in the 73rd minute, assisted by Sangbin Jeong. Six minutes later, Daniel Rios equalized for Vancouver with a header off a pass from Sebastian Berhalter. The deciding goal came deep into stoppage time when Thomas Müeller scored from the penalty spot.

Following this result, St. Louis CITY SC will return home to play Houston Dynamo at Energizer Park on Saturday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Eduard Löwen’s goal was his fourth of the season and his 15th in Major League Soccer (MLS). João Klauss recorded his ninth goal of the season and has now scored eight times in his last twelve MLS matches. Sangbin Jeong registered his first assist of the season, while Conrad Wallem picked up his third assist overall and second in consecutive games.

The match saw Andres Cubas of Vancouver receive a yellow card in the 69th minute.

For Vancouver, Yohei Takaoka started as goalkeeper with defenders Mathias Laborda, Belal Halbouni, Tristan Blackmon, and Edier Ocampo; midfielders Jayden Nelson, Thomas Müeller, Sebastian Berhalter, and Andres Cubas; forwards Emmanuel Sabbi and Brian White led their attack.

St. Louis lined up with Roman Bürki in goal; defenders Conrad Wallem, Timo Baumgartl, Henry Kessler, Devin Padelford; midfielders Chris Durkin, Eduard Löwen, Sangbin Jeong, Marcel Hartel, Tomáš Ostrák; and forward João Klauss.

Vancouver finished with 22 total shots (8 on target), while St. Louis had 11 shots (4 on target). The teams were nearly even on fouls committed—13 for Vancouver and 12 for St. Louis—with each side flagged once for offside.

The referee was Fotis Bazakos with assistants Jeremy Hanson and Brooke Mayo.
