The St. Louis Cardinals have introduced a new initiative this season called the Cardinals Conversations series, aimed at providing fans with more opportunities to interact with former players. The program was developed by Larry State, director of alumni relations for the team, and his staff as they sought ways to expand their lineup of alumni-focused events.

Traditionally, the Cardinals have offered activities such as baseball fantasy camps and youth clinics led by former players. However, the Cardinals Conversations series offers a different approach: small group Q&A sessions with past team members at Busch Stadium.

"We're fortunate how many alumni we have that love to engage with fans," State said. "And we’re always trying to find more opportunities for fans to engage with them."

In previous years, similar events were typically limited to corporate partners or select groups. This is the first year that these conversations are being made available to the general fanbase.

"Among all of the things we’ve done in any setting, this is always one of the most popular," State explained.

The series has already featured appearances by Ozzie Smith, Ted Simmons, and David Eckstein. The final session for this season will feature David Freese on September 17th. Fans can purchase packages that include both event admission and a ticket to that night's game through cardinals.com/conversations. Those who already have tickets for the game can buy an add-on for access to the conversation.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to take a photo with Freese and the 2011 World Series trophy. Each guest receives a pre-signed photo of the featured player from that event, with authentication provided.

According to State, much of the value comes from hearing candid stories from former players about both well-known and lesser-known moments in their careers. Emcees Brad Thompson and Chip Caray lead these discussions.

"Brad (Thompson) and Chip (Caray) do their homework," State said. "You hear the alumni talk about some of the moments we all know about, but they bring a perspective that maybe you haven't heard them talk about before. And then, they'll also talk about moments in their careers that maybe you didn't know about but which they say were some of the most important things that happened to them."

Fans interested in participating are encouraged to prepare questions ahead of time for these interactive sessions.
