Iván Herrera has started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis as he recovers from a strained left hamstring. The St. Louis Cardinals have decided not to put him behind the plate for the remainder of the 2025 season, aiming to protect his lower body while keeping his bat in play.

Manager Oliver Marmol stated, “We have to definitely keep that in mind as far as if we want to keep him healthy for the remaining couple months.” Although they haven't finalized their approach, it seems likely Herrera will not catch this season.

Herrera's season has been affected by two injuries to his left leg. He suffered a bone bruise on April 6 and strained his hamstring on June 19. Despite these setbacks, he has hit eight home runs and driven in 36 runs, boasting a .320 batting average and a .925 OPS.

His defensive performance as catcher has shown weaknesses, with opposing baserunners successfully stealing bases against him without being thrown out. Last year, he allowed 55 steals while catching only four would-be thieves. Meanwhile, Pedro Pagés is praised for his skills behind the plate and is expected to remain the starter for the rest of the year, with Yohel Pozo as backup.

The Cardinals are considering Herrera's future role but have not made any decisions about a permanent position change. Herrera has played primarily as catcher and designated hitter in MLB but had some experience at first base during international competitions.

“I’d like to just finish the year with that being the case and then we can re-evaluate,” Marmol added regarding Herrera's position.
