Adam Wainwright made a return to the mound at Busch Stadium this past weekend as part of the Savannah Bananas' visit for two Banana Ball games against the Party Animals. The event featured sold-out crowds, unique entertainment including a mid-game marriage proposal, and various themed treats like Banana Beer and Banana Bread cookies.
Wainwright, who retired in 2023, wore bright Banana yellow and his familiar No. 50 jersey. He received a standing ovation when he entered the game in the seventh inning, where he faced two hitters. "This feels like a mixture of a playoff game and a WWE wrestling match," Wainwright commented on the lively atmosphere.
He had initially planned to participate during the Bananas' original dates in April but had to withdraw due to an injury while preparing. This time, he limited his preparation to playing catch before taking part in the event.
Savannah Banana player Noah Niznik, originally from St. Louis, performed with teammates to Nelly's "Country Grammar" during one of the games. "I kind of knew we were going to do something for my hometown like that," Niznik said about the performance.
The Cardinals special events department organized the extravaganza, attracting fans from across 45 states as well as Hawaii and Canada. Attendees lined up more than 24 hours before the first pitch to purchase merchandise from colorful tents set up outside Gate 3.
