The St. Louis Cardinals, after an unexpected push for the postseason earlier in the year, have shifted focus to rebuilding by trading several key bullpen pitchers ahead of Thursday’s MLB Trade Deadline. The team moved closer Ryan Helsley, setup man Phil Maton, and left-hander Steven Matz in separate deals that brought in six new prospects to strengthen their Minor League system.

President of baseball operations John Mozeliak expressed satisfaction with the results of his final Trade Deadline before Chaim Bloom is set to take over front-office duties at the end of this season. “What intrigues the team is Baez’s high contact rate and his potential power -- something that could grow as his body matures,” Mozeliak said regarding one of the new acquisitions.

Among the notable additions is shortstop Jesus Baez, acquired from the Mets in exchange for Helsley. Baez was a standout during his time with New York’s Dominican Summer League affiliate and later made a strong impression stateside before a knee injury ended his 2024 season early. Scouts praise Baez’s power and ability to make contact, though they note he may eventually move from shortstop to third base or a corner outfield spot as he develops.

Blaze Jordan joins the Cardinals from Boston following a trade for Matz. Known since childhood for prodigious home run feats, Jordan has shown solid hitting skills but less power than expected so far in professional play. He will begin with Triple-A Memphis, close to his hometown of Southaven, Mississippi.

Left-handed pitcher Mason Molina arrives via a deal that sent Maton to Texas just before the deadline expired. Molina is recognized for an effective changeup and swing-and-miss capabilities that fit what St. Louis has been seeking on its pitching staff. He has spent recent seasons developing at Single-A and High-A levels.

Right-hander Nate Dohm also comes from New York as part of the Helsley trade package. Dohm showed promise both as a starter and reliever during college and was drafted by the Mets last year after overcoming injury setbacks.

These players are expected to join or soon rank among St. Louis’ Top 30 prospects according to MLB Pipeline evaluations, though most are not anticipated to reach Busch Stadium until at least 2026 or later.

The trades reflect St. Louis’ commitment to building future depth despite sacrificing experienced bullpen arms for immediate competition this season.
