In their previous match, CITY2 drew 2-2 with Colorado Rapids 2 but secured an extra point by winning a penalty shootout 5-4. After Rapids 2 took the lead in the second half, Mykhi Joyner equalized from the penalty spot in the 81st minute for his thirteenth goal of the season. The game went to penalties where Christian Olivares made a key save and Brendan McSorley converted the decisive kick. With this result, St Louis extended its unbeaten run to 12 games and increased its lead atop MLS NEXT Pro’s Western Conference standings to 11 points with a total of 48 points.
Miguel Perez and Mykhi Joyner have played significant roles for CITY2 this season, contributing to eight and sixteen goals respectively in 2025. Joyner is currently second in the Golden Boot race and leads all players in penalty goals with eight.
North Texas SC holds seventh place in the Western Conference with 31 points and an even record of eight wins, eight losses, and four draws. At home in Choctaw Stadium this year, North Texas has four wins, four losses, and one draw but has not won at home since July 3. Forward Sam Sarver leads both North Texas and MLS NEXT Pro with fifteen goals while Anthony Ramírez tops his team with six assists. In their last match against Austin FC II, North Texas won after a penalty shootout that ended 6-5.
CITY2 has had strong results against North Texas SC during this campaign, starting with a 3-0 victory to open their season and following up with a 2-0 win on June 4—a match that marked interim head coach John Hackworth’s first win for CITY2. Brendan McSorley, Miguel Perez, Emil Jääskeläinen, Matteo Kidd, along with an own goal by North Texas have all contributed to these victories.
After Saturday's game at Choctaw Stadium concludes their regular-season series against each other for this year.
