St Louis CITY2 wins on penalties over LAFC2 to extend unbeaten run

St Louis CITY2 secured a 4-2 victory in a penalty shootout against LAFC2, extending their unbeaten streak to 18 matches and ensuring the best record in the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro regular season. The match, held at Energizer Park, saw limited action in the first half before LAFC2 took the lead in the 63rd minute with a goal from Matt Evans.

The game remained 1-0 until stoppage time when Mykhi Joyner earned and converted a penalty kick to tie the score. "Mykhi Joyner scored his 15th goal of the season, scoring from the penalty spotJoyner is a perfect 9-for-9 from the penalty spot this year. The winger leads the league in penalty goals scored this season," according to team officials.

In the subsequent penalty shootout, CITY2 goalkeeper Christian Olivares made one save, while Emil Jääskeläinen scored the decisive kick. "Christian Olivares recorded his fourth clean sheet of the year, adding to the team’s five total clean sheets in 2025," noted postgame reports.

With this result, CITY2 improved their home record to 8-1-5 and have only lost once at Energizer Park during this season. The team has also clinched the number one seed for the upcoming playoffs.

The match included several cautions for both teams and featured lineups that saw multiple substitutions throughout regulation. CITY2 will conclude their regular season on October 5 with an away game against Portland Timbers2.
