Nolan Arenado, the St. Louis Cardinals' third baseman, experienced a minor setback on Sunday when he jammed his right index finger while reaching first base for the 1,900th hit of his career. Despite this mishap, Arenado also achieved another career milestone by recording his 400th double during the game against the Cleveland Guardians.

Arenado was instrumental in the Cardinals' 7-0 victory over the Guardians, which secured a three-game sweep in Cleveland. However, he had to exit the game in the eighth inning due to swelling in his injured finger.

Reflecting on how he might have injured himself, Arenado said, “I think it was when I tripped at first and I hit myself or something.” He added that although his finger was swollen and stiffened during the game, it felt better after treatment.

The injury is not expected to sideline Arenado as he hopes to play in the upcoming series against the Pittsburgh Pirates starting Monday. The Cardinals are scheduled for an off-day on Thursday before facing their rivals, the Chicago Cubs, over the Fourth of July weekend.

In achieving these milestones, Arenado joins notable players such as Paul Goldschmidt, Freddie Freeman, Andrew McCutchen, Manny Machado, and Jose Altuve with 1,900 career hits. His achievement of 400 doubles places him among active players like Altuve, McCutchen, Goldschmidt, and Freeman.

“To be amongst those guys, it’s an amazing feeling,” Arenado remarked. “It’s an honor to be up there with my boy [Goldschmidt], because he’s like a big brother.”
