PHOENIX -- The St. Louis Cardinals began the second half of their season with a 7-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, following a challenging period before the All-Star break. The team ended the first half with a 51-46 record, their best since 2015, but struggled with injuries leading to a 3-8 stretch.
Manager Oliver Marmol acknowledged the need for the break due to player injuries. "The break was much needed," he said. "Our guys were beat up. We’re still coming out of it."
Second baseman Nolan Gorman was initially set to play but was scratched from the lineup due to back issues and is considered day-to-day. However, third baseman Nolan Arenado returned after missing two games with a sprained finger, and right fielder Jordan Walker came back from an appendectomy.
Walker has faced challenges this season, posting a .206/.262/.289 slash line and dealing with multiple injuries. Marmol hopes recent mechanical adjustments will improve his performance in the second half.
“I think when you look at Jordan, there’s a lot of inconsistencies with the way his bat comes through,” Marmol stated. “And I think [these changes] will help clean up some of the wasted movement.”
In Friday's game, Walker nearly hit a home run that was caught by D-backs center fielder Alek Thomas in an impressive play. Despite being an out, Marmol saw potential in Walker's at-bat.
“We need to continue to see more of that,” Marmol commented on Walker's performance.
Marmol is focused on developing young players like Walker while aiming for postseason success after two years away from October baseball. He emphasized continued growth and opportunities for young talent such as Gorman, Victor Scott II, and Masyn Winn.
“We’ve gotten here by developing and continuing to grow and giving guys some opportunities,” said Marmol.
