Erick Fedde, Pitcher | St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals have designated veteran pitcher Erick Fedde for assignment following a challenging period in his MLB career. The decision came after Fedde allowed seven hits, six earned runs, and two home runs in just three innings during the Cardinals' 8-4 defeat to the Rockies.
Fedde expressed accountability for his performance, acknowledging his confidence issues over the past two and a half months. "The truth is I’ve been awful and I’m putting the team in terrible spots," he said. "Confidence, for sure, an all-time low."
Since achieving a complete-game shutout on May 9 against the Nationals, Fedde has struggled with an 0-7 record and a 6.38 ERA over 12 starts. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol discussed the situation with Fedde at their hotel, stating that they had given him multiple opportunities to improve but it wasn't translating into games.
Fedde was acquired last July before becoming a free agent at season's end. The Cardinals had hoped he could be valuable enough to trade for future prospects. However, after another poor outing against Mickey Moniak and Ryan McMahon, they decided to make changes to maintain their chances of securing an NL Wild Card playoff spot.
Right-handed reliever Andre Granillo has been recalled to replace Fedde on the active roster. This move also opens up a rotation spot for Michael McGreevy, who recently performed well against the Rockies with seven innings of work allowing only two earned runs.
"It gives us a real shot," Marmol commented on transitioning from Fedde to McGreevy. "It’s an upgrade, and the timing of it is good."
McGreevy has made several spot starts this season and is expected to stay with the team under pitching coach Dusty Blake's guidance for further development.
Marmol praised McGreevy's handling of tough assignments: “He’s done a nice job and he’s handled every assignment." He added that regular starts would help McGreevy progress further.
Fedde joined St. Louis along with Tommy Pham last year in a trade involving the White Sox and Dodgers. Previously winning seven games with Chicago before being traded due to fatigue complaints late last season; he went 5-15 across parts of two seasons as part of Cardinal rosters.
