St. Louis CITY SC is set to introduce its first-ever team pet, a certified facility dog, in collaboration with Purina. The initiative aims to support players, staff, and fans while serving as a community resource in the St. Louis area.

Andrea Faccio, President and Chief Growth Officer at Purina, stated: “Since announcing our partnership with CITY SC, we’ve envisioned a world where we work together to redefine the role of pets in sport. Since then, we’ve taken amazing strides toward our shared ambition to make CITY SC the most pet-friendly sports club in the world.”

The selection process for the team pet is documented in a four-part series titled "TEAM PET," available on CITY SC's YouTube channel. Narrated by Taylor Twellman, the series highlights the efforts of puppy raisers and their contributions to preparing dogs for service roles.

CHAMP Assistance Dogs, a local nonprofit organization, will assist in training and certifying the dogs. Seven dogs are being evaluated based on temperament and adaptability for potential certification as therapy or facility dogs.

Dr. Annie Valuska from Purina commented: “A lot of factors go into identifying the ‘right’ dog for a job like this – a combination of genetics, socialization and training – and it’s important for us to put the CITY team pet in a position to be successful and enjoy this work.”

The chosen team pet will participate in matchday activities at Energizer Park and engage with fans during events. It will also partake in community outreach by visiting schools and hospitals.

Lutz Pfannenstiel, Sporting Director at St. Louis CITY SC, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are extremely fortunate to have a partner like Purina who is willing to support us – and our fans – in new and innovative ways.”

Ken Earley from St. Louis CITY SC emphasized the positive impact: “Welcoming a team pet with the help of Purina is a tremendous asset that will enhance our club’s ability to continue to be an exceptional club and neighbor.”
