Throughout his 11 years with the St. Louis Cardinals, Ryan Helsley has been known for his steady presence in the clubhouse. However, as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches, Helsley’s future with the team is uncertain.

“The odds are that I’ll be somewhere else,” Helsley told MLB.com, referring to where he might be playing after Thursday’s 5 p.m. CT trade deadline.

The Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly contacted the Cardinals about several relievers, including Helsley. According to a source, discussions have advanced to the point where Toronto has considered a plan for Jeff Hoffman and Helsley to share closing duties if a trade occurs. The Blue Jays recently acquired Seranthony Domínguez from Baltimore but may still pursue additional bullpen help.

The Philadelphia Phillies are also interested in bolstering their bullpen and could meet the Cardinals’ asking price for Helsley due to their strong farm system. The Phillies are seeking upgrades after falling short of postseason goals in recent years.

Other teams mentioned as possible destinations include the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Texas Rangers. There is also speculation that third baseman Nolan Arenado could be included in a larger deal involving teams like Philadelphia or Los Angeles. Arenado previously used his no-trade clause to block a move last December but may now be open to joining a contender following recent struggles at the plate.

Helsley was drafted by St. Louis in 2015 and reached 100 career saves on June 28 of this season. He set a club record with 49 saves in 2024 and won the Trevor Hoffman NL Reliever of the Year award last year.

Arenado joined St. Louis before the 2021 season hoping to help deliver another championship but has only appeared in three playoff games during his time with the team and has not won any postseason contests since leaving Colorado.

Helsley’s potential departure comes as demand for top-tier closers increased when Cleveland Guardians All-Star Emmanuel Clase was placed on paid leave through August 31, removing him from trade consideration and increasing interest in Helsley across Major League Baseball.

As many as ten teams have reportedly shown interest in acquiring Helsley ahead of Thursday's deadline.

If Arenado were traded along with Helsley, it would require Arenado’s approval due to his no-trade clause; such a move could fulfill his desire to play for a title contender like Philadelphia, where Bryce Harper has indicated willingness to change positions if needed for roster flexibility.

Final decisions regarding trades involving either player are expected by Thursday evening.
