Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn was removed from Sunday’s starting lineup due to ongoing soreness in his left knee. The team reported that Winn had received a pain-killing injection during the All-Star break and has been managing discomfort for several weeks.
Earlier on Sunday, Major League Baseball revised its ruling on a play involving Winn from Tuesday’s game against the Marlins. Initially, a fourth-inning grounder that Winn bobbled was ruled an infield single, but it was later changed to an error. This decision ended Winn’s errorless streak at 49 games; previously, he had not committed an error since June 19.
The updated scoring means Winn now has three errors this season. The MLB record for fewest errors by a shortstop playing at least 140 games is three, set by Cal Ripken in 1990 and matched by Omar Vizquel in 2000.
Winn leads all of MLB with 21 Outs Above Average, ahead of Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs and Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals, who each have 19. In his 116 appearances this season, Winn holds a .258 batting average with nine home runs and 46 RBIs. He also has nine stolen bases but has been caught stealing five times.
Manager Oliver Marmol explained that both Winn and left fielder Alec Burleson were considered game-time decisions due to injuries—Burleson dealing with right wrist irritation—but only Burleson returned to action after resting Friday and Saturday.
"We’re on the same page as far as what [his playing schedule] needs to look like and how to protect it and how to be smart with night-day games and doubleheaders and that type of stuff,” Marmol said. “That part of it has been super smooth, because it’s easy for me to talk to him and get a real answer for how we need to move on something. And he’s super honest with it, knowing when he can go and when he’s on the verge of needing a day [off]. That part of it has been really easy.”
The Cardinals hope that Winn will be able to return Monday night when they face the Pirates at Busch Stadium.
